Austyn Taylor: The Nomadic Sculptor

Born in New York, Austyn Taylor's artistic journey has been as nomadic as her studio practice. As a visiting resident artist, her creative spirit has traversed the globe, leaving an indelible mark in collections across Lebanon, Japan, Mexico, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Spain, China, France, Taiwan, Netherlands, Belgium, the United States, Germany, Canada, Denmark, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong. Currently, she calls the coastal redwoods of Mendocino, CA, USA, her artistic haven.

Austyn Taylor's figurative sculpture marries contemporary design with a pop culture perspective. Drawing inspiration from ancient and contemporary sources, she conjures works of "folk-pop" art. Somewhere between "hype" and "hope," her sculptures embody the history of their creation through intricate material handling. They provoke a curious humor and delight that resonates with the absurd and alienating experiences of existence.

02

Austyn Taylor: Bridging Realism and Optimism

Austyn Taylor's panpsychist humorist narrative has given birth to a world of recurring characters – bears, bulls, horses, deer, lions, ducks, predators, and prey. Each sculpture is a declaration, a statement that exists as an optimistic reframe of the human narrative's banalities.

A nomadic sculptor, Austyn hails from Rochester, NY. Her career evolved from art education to ceramics, culminating in an MFA from Alfred University in 2016. Since then, she's embarked on a globetrotting artistic journey, participating in numerous residencies across the world, from Denmark's Guldagergaard to California's VARDA.

As a teaching artist, Austyn believes in the brutally honest nature of working with clay. It reveals our inner dialogues and expresses our life's novel in each piece. Her sculptures, rooted in the absurd humor of cognitive dissonance, blend imagery from midcentury American cartoons, modern art, and ancient sculpture to convey the friendly adage, "everyone is trying their best."
